The reports by the US State Department on Thursday said China intends to displace America as the world’s leading power. It comes as the US is preparing for a transition of power from Donald Trump to President-elect Joe Biden.
The 70-page document claimed that China sees rising India as a “rival”.
The report said: “China perceives rising India as a rival and seeks to impel it to accommodate Beijing’s ambitions by engaging economically while constraining New Delhi’s strategic partnership with the US, Japan, Australia and its relations with other democracies.”
It added: “China is undermining the security, autonomy, and economic interests of many others in the region — such as member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including those in the vital Mekong Region, as well as the nations of the Pacific Islands.”
Awareness of China’s moves to trigger competition has been growing in the US and other nations.
The report said: “Yet few discern the pattern in China’s inroads within every region of the world, much less the specific form of dominance to which the party aspires.”
It added: “In the face of the China challenge, the US must secure freedom.”
The document also said Beijing is seeking to diminish US influence by creating an atmosphere that china’s dominance is inevitable.
The report said: “Prime targets include US treaty-based allies — Japan, South Korea, Australia, Thailand, and the Philippines — as well as emerging strategic partners such as India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Taiwan.”
Tensions between China and India have been the worst in decades and have continued to escalate.
The Galwan Valley attack in June saw 20 Indian soldiers died following a clash with Chinese troops in the area.
The hand-to-hand battle was the most serious military confrontation between the two neighbours in more than half a century.
China and India’s standoff over disputed territory has halted peace.

The report also spoke about Beijing’s relations with Taiwan.
China has claimed the independent state as its own territory.
The report said: “Beijing menaces democratic Taiwan, which it considers a renegade province, intending to reunify Taiwan with the Mainland — by force if necessary.
“And the PLA Navy and Chinese Coast Guard increasingly challenge Japan’s administrative control of the Senkaku Islands.”
It added: “The Trump administration achieved a fundamental break with conventional wisdom.
“It concluded that the China’s Communist Party’s resolute conduct and self-professed goals require the US and other countries to revise assumptions and develop a new strategic doctrine to address the primacy and magnitude of the China challenge.”
The report also highlighted that China is developing a “world class” army to rival and eventually surpass the US.
The document also claims that Beijing has engaged in intellectual-property theft and seeks worldwide dominance in high-tech sectors including 5G.
It added claims that the country is pursuing control in key global supply chains.
The report urged the US to strengthen its alliances with other countries to maintain a “free, open” international order.
