Harrowing video shows coronavirus patients on ventilators in ‘worst nightmare’

Disturbing footage has emerged of coronavirus patients on ventilators in intensive care wards.

Liverpool City Council shared the clip on Twitter as frontline medics begged the public to follow the rules.

Filmed inside the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, nurses and doctors are seen gearing up in protective suits as they prepare to enter the intensive care units (ICUs).

Patients with the virus remain on the bed with ventilators and IV drips attached while the NHS staff treat them.

Louise Lightfoot, an intensive therapy unit (ITU) sister at the hospital, says: "It's like living your worst nightmare, honestly.

"We're coming into work, staff are seeing it first-hand what's happening as a result of what's going on outside the hospital.

"How ill people are becoming, very, very quickly deteriorating much more of a faster pace now.

"We're all doing the best that we can to keep everyone safe, but we need more people out there to do what they can also."

"This isn't going away any time soon."

In one segment, one medical worker can be seen performing CPR on a Covid-19 patient while her colleagues are monitoring the health charts.

Critical care consultant Dr Richard Wenstone said he is concerned the second wave has not peaked yet.

He added: "This is a very serious disease.

"It's here, it's not going to go away very quickly, it is killing people and it's going to continue to kill people until there's a vaccine – if we ever get a vaccine."

Liverpool was the first region in the UK to be placed into Tier 3 lockdown, the highest alert level.

Under the new rules, people are banned from mixing with other households, indoors or outdoors.
