Following the announcement of a new tier system to determine COVID-19 restrictions, concerns have been raised over possible financial support for areas affected. Shadow Chancellor Anneliese Dodds questioned the Government’s repeated “deviation” from their original coronavirus plans and called for funding for locked down regions. Stephen Barclay, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, hit back at the Labour MP, pointing out her own party’s backtracking.
He said: “It’s slightly odd for the Opposition to talk about deviation when their own position has deviated as much as it has.
“Not least on issues such as the curfew which they said they would support and then refused to do so.
“In terms of the points of substance that she raises, the package of support that the Chancellor and Prime Minister announced did support local authorities.
“There’s an additional billion to local authorities plus a further £500 million to address the Track and Trace locally.”
